How to Add Page Numbers to a PDF

Merged documents, scanned bundles and exported slides usually arrive without page numbers — and the moment someone says “see page 14”, you need them. Adding numbers afterwards does not require rebuilding the document.

Haven PDF stamps page numbers onto an existing PDF in your browser: choose the corner or center, the format (1, Page 1, 1 / 20), and the starting number — useful when a cover page should not count. As always: the file is never uploaded, and the tool is free without limits.

How to

  1. Open the Page numbers tool. Free, in your browser.
  2. Add your PDF. Processing is local; nothing is uploaded.
  3. Choose position and format. Bottom corner or center; plain (1), labeled (Page 1) or fraction (1 / 20); set the starting number.
  4. Apply and download. Every page gets its number; download the finished file.

Common setups

Reports and theses: bottom center, “1” or “1 / 120”. Legal bundles: bottom right, continuous numbering across merged exhibits. Slide handouts: bottom right, small size so it does not collide with slide content.

Skipping the cover page

Set the starting number so the visible numbering matches expectations — e.g. start at 1 on the second physical page by numbering after removing the cover, or simply accept the cover as page 1 depending on your requirement.

Numbering merged documents

The killer combo: merge several PDFs with the Merge tool, then number the combined file once. The result reads as one continuous document — exactly what courts, reviewers and printers want.

Frequently asked questions

Can I control where the numbers appear?
Yes — pick the position (corners or center) and the format; the numbers are stamped consistently on every page.
Can numbering start from a number other than 1?
Yes. Set the starting number — handy for continuing an existing bundle or skipping front matter.
Is my document uploaded?
No. Numbering runs entirely in your browser; the PDF never leaves your device.
Will numbers overlap existing footers?
If the page already has a footer, choose a different corner or the opposite edge to avoid collisions.
