Print a PDF as a booklet

Fold a stack of A4 sheets in half, staple the spine, and you have a booklet — except the pages are in the wrong order unless someone did the imposition math: the last page prints next to the first, the second next to the second-to-last, and so on, in the right rotation.

Haven PDF does that math for you. The Booklet tool takes your ordinary PDF and produces a print-ready file with two pages per sheet in booklet order — including the blank padding pages needed to make the count divisible by four. Print it double-sided, fold, staple: the booklet reads front to back.

How to

  1. Open your PDF in Haven PDF. Any ordinary PDF works — the tool handles the page math.
  2. Run the Booklet tool. Pages are reordered and imposed two-per-sheet, with blank pages padded automatically.
  3. Download the print file. The result is a new PDF arranged in booklet order.
  4. Print double-sided and fold. Flip on short edge, 100% scale, fold and staple on the spine.

What imposition actually does

A 8-page booklet printed on 2 sheets needs page order 8-1 / 2-7 on the first sheet and 6-3 / 4-5 on the second — each sheet carries four pages, two per side, rotated correctly. Doing this by hand in a print dialog fails the moment the page count changes; the Booklet tool recomputes it for any document length.

Printing it right

Print the generated file double-sided with "flip on short edge" and 100% scale (no fit-to-page — that shrinks your margins). Fold the stack in half, staple twice on the fold. If your printer only does single-sided, print odd sheets, re-feed, then even sheets.

Booklets from A5 designs

Designing at A5 and printing on A4 is the natural pairing: two A5 pages fill one A4 side exactly. Create the content as an A5 document (the Blank PDF tool has A5 built in), then run the Booklet tool for the print file.

Frequently asked questions

Does the page count have to be divisible by four?
No — blank pages are added automatically at the end so the fold works out.
Is my document uploaded to create the booklet?
No. The reordering and imposition run entirely in your browser; the file never leaves your device.
Which paper sizes work?
Any size: two of your pages are placed per sheet. The classic combo is A5 content on A4 sheets, but Letter and others impose the same way.
