How to Add a Watermark to a PDF
A watermark tells every copy of a document what it is: DRAFT, CONFIDENTIAL, PAID, or simply your brand. Adding one does not require Acrobat — Haven PDF stamps text or an image across every page directly in your browser.
And unlike most “free” watermark sites, there is no irony here: no service watermark gets added to your file, nothing is uploaded to a server, and there is no page limit. Contracts and invoices stay on your device while you mark them.
How to
- Open the Watermark tool. Free, in your browser — no sign-up or install.
- Add your PDF. The file is processed locally and never uploaded.
- Design the watermark. Type the text (e.g. CONFIDENTIAL) or upload a logo; set size, angle, opacity and position.
- Apply and download. The watermark is stamped on every page; download the result.
Text or image — which to use
Text watermarks (DRAFT, CONFIDENTIAL, SAMPLE) are best for document status: they compress well and stay readable at any zoom. Image watermarks suit branding — a semi-transparent logo at 10–20% opacity marks ownership without hurting readability.
Getting the look right
The classic diagonal gray stamp works because it is visible without blocking content: 45° angle, 30–40% opacity, centered. For a subtle brand mark, place a small logo in a corner at low opacity instead of tiling it.
A watermark is not redaction
A watermark overlays content; it does not remove anything underneath. If you need to hide sensitive text for good, use the Redact tool — it truly deletes the content rather than covering it.
Frequently asked questions
- Will a service watermark be added to my PDF?
- No — only the watermark you design. Haven PDF is free without branding your files.
- Can I watermark only certain pages?
- Apply the watermark, or split the document first with the Split tool and watermark just the part you need.
- Is the PDF uploaded while watermarking?
- No. Everything runs in your browser; the document never leaves your device.
- Can a watermark be removed later?
- A flattened watermark becomes part of the page and is hard to remove cleanly — which is usually the point. Keep an unwatermarked original for yourself.
